About the event

Event title: Mr Gay Syria Screening + Q&A with Satrio (Tiko) Nindyo Istiko

As part of our LGBTQ+ History Month programme, we have organised a screening of Mr Gay Syria (2017) which follows two gay Syrian refugees who are trying to rebuild their lives. Husein is a barber in Istanbul, living a double life between his conservative family and his gay identity. Mahmoud is the founder of Syria's LGBTI movement and is a refugee in Berlin. What brings them together is a dream: to participate in an international beauty contest as an escape from their trapped lives and an answer to their invisibility.

Afterwards, there will be a 15-minute talk about LGBTQ+ migration from Satrio Nindyo Istiko (who goes by Tiko), a researcher in public health of migrant communities. Tiko is in the process of moving from France to England (via Australia!) to work for the NHS in Bradford and will be joining via video link. There will be a short Q&A afterwards. There is no charge for the event, but we encourage attendees to donate to Rainbow Migration, a charity which supports LGBTQI+ people through the asylum and immigration system.

Location: Bush House Auditorium, Central Block, North Wing
